The 10 essentials of a Healthy Diet

In order to pursue a goal to truly live a healthy lifestyle you need to understand what you are taking in. To determine what type of Eating Habits will be the healthier for you, you need to determine several things before you get started:

  • Consume more of whole grains, dals & legumes
  • Prefer skimmed milk & its products rather than whole milk.
  • Whole fruits, fresh vegetables, leafy vegetables should be consumed in good amounts in every meal.
  • Consume low fat non-vegetarian foods like egg whites, fish, lean portions of chicken.
  • Incorporate foods like tomato, potato, kiwi, orange, bell peppers, bananas, carrots, lentils, tuna, salmon, wholegrain flour, and sunflower seeds which are great immune boosters.
  • The amount and type of oil used is very important. Do not consume more than 3-4 tsp oil/person/day. A blend of oil is preferred than single oil.
  • Limit intake of sugar, honey and jaggery. Avoid saturated fats like ghee, butter, margarine, cheese.
  • Roasting, grilling, baking, steaming, boiling, stewing should be used as cooking methods instead of deep-frying so as to reduce the oil consumption.
  • Hydrate yourself with 1.5-2 litres/day of water
  • Take at least 15-20 minutes to complete your meal. Keep a gap of minimum 1-11/2 hour between dinner and bedtime
